Coincidentally, nurse Shelley Larsen is a client at a hair salon that employs Juana, a BVMI patient.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cJuana mentioned that for a while, she couldn\u2019t afford healthcare, and then she found BVMI,\u201d said Shelley. \u201cShe said she\u2019d had some bad experiences with medical care in the past, but at BVMI it was entirely different.\u201d<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMy daughter discovered BVMI for me about three years ago,\u201d explained Juana. \u201cI really needed a checkup and a mammogram. I was also pre-diabetic. Now I\u2019m healthier. These caring people have helped me mentally and emotionally, too.\u201d Juana is a member of the Prevent Diabetes Program which is a year-long program that educates patients on a healthy lifestyle including healthy foods, exercise and stress reduction.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSomething else Juana shared stayed with me,\u201d said Shelley. \u201cShe was grateful that her primary care provider at BVMI, nurse practitioner Victoria Eftychiou, focused on more than Juana the Patient; she also listened to Juana the Person. That made me want to learn more about BVMI.\u201d<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019ve always been interested in health,\u201d added Shelley. \u201cI actually managed a health care club for several years. But when my father passed away much too soon, I began to assess how else I could make a difference. That\u2019s when I decided to go into nursing.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, Shelley is an RN at Hackensack University Medical Center with an MS degree in Nursing, and she\u2019s studying to become a nurse practitioner. We\u2019re delighted that, as busy she is, Shelley is joining the BVMI team as a clinical volunteer!<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cConnecting life\u2019s dots is important,\u201d said Shelley. \u201cI believe that Juana telling me about BVMI and me following up was meant to be. I\u2019ve seen too many \u2018frequent fliers\u2019 in hospital emergency rooms \u2013 people with heart failure, COPD, all kinds of issues. Fewer would be there if they\u2019d received preventive care and education sooner. That\u2019s one of the reasons BVMI\u2019s model for healthcare is so inspiring.\u201d<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An added bonus for BVMI is that our new prospective volunteer is fluent in Spanish. \u201cJuana told me this is the primary language spoken by many BVMI patients,\u201d said Shelley. \u201cI\u2019ve seen the difference when a nurse knows the patients\u2019 language. You connect the emotion on their faces with their actual words. It tells you a lot more.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Juana told us she would recommend BVMI to anyone.
