HACKENSACK, NJ — Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5) visited the Bergen Volunteer Medical Initiative (BVMI) in Hackensack for a tour of the facility and to discuss the organization’s critical role in providing free, high-quality healthcare to lower income, uninsured residents in Bergen County.
During the visit, Gottheimer met with BVMI leadership, medical professionals, and volunteers to learn more about their work delivering comprehensive primary and specialty care to working families who might otherwise go without treatment.
“BVMI is a shining example of what community-driven care looks like,” said Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5). “They are on the front lines, making sure hardworking Jersey families have access to the healthcare they need to stay healthy and get ahead. I’m grateful for their commitment and will keep fighting in Congress to lower costs and expand access to care.”
Founded in 2009, BVMI provides free healthcare services — including primary care, specialty care, mental health services, and medications — to eligible patients. BVMI has a dedicated team of 75 volunteer healthcare professionals providing care to 1,000 patients annually. They see patients five days a week, both in the clinic and via telehealth. They have a nurse practitioner on staff who is available for phone consults and sick visits, helping to keep patients out of the emergency room.The organization relies on volunteer physicians, nurses, and community partners to meet the growing demand for care.
Gottheimer’s visit underscores his continued focus on lowering healthcare costs, expanding access to care, and supporting community health providers across New Jersey.
