Volunteer doctors and nurses are needed to help treat Bergen County's uninsured, working poor at the Bergen Volunteer Medical Initiative's health center in Hackensack.  The center moved to new and larger offices on Essex Street earlier this year, and has seen an uptick in the number of patients seeking care.

Volunteer physician Dr. Heidi Ahlborn says, "Volunteering at BVMI is one of the highlights of my week. I love serving this community of people. They are humble and gracious and thankful. These are the people mowing our lawns, working in kitchens, working in laundries, nail salons, cleaning our houses; services we want. They have no insurance or access to affordable health care. We provide this."

BVMI began administering a mental health screening to all patients in 2015. This year, a $40,000 grant from the Aetna Foundation enabled them to hire a part-time, bilingual social worker, Kathy Acosta, LCSW.
