George Reskakis, DDS

“The difference we make in people’s lives is truly remarkable.”

George Reskakis, DDS is a retired dentist who has been a dedicated volunteer since 2022. He is our resident “jack of all trades” who first heard about BVMI from a fellow member of the Waldwick Chamber of Commerce. We are most thankful that he decided to pay the dues for BVMI to join the Chamber!  As a result, we received a generous grant from the Waldwick Chamber of Commerce two years in a row. Thank you!

When asked why he decided to volunteer, Dr. Reskakis said, “BVMI’s mission is very appealing. I believe health care is a right and as a society we must support those who cannot  afford it and provide access to basic care. I feel very blessed to have had a great career and feel compelled to give back; this is the perfect place to do that.”

He added that as a retired dentist, volunteering at BVMI keeps him connected to the medical field. “I get continuing education by working with the wonderful doctors here. Additionally, the staff is so friendly and wonderful, it’s just a great place to work.”

As part of that work, Dr. Reskakis provided an in-service training on oral pathology at a professional development meeting and because he was trained on our electronic medical records software, he has served as scribe for our nephrologist, Dr. Ackad, saving him significant administrative time, allowing for improved patient care.

Out of the office, Dr. Reskakis enjoys assisting with outreach efforts to community organizations.  “I represent BVMI at community fairs, I volunteered at the 5th annual golf outing, and I served as clinic tour guide at the BVMI@Unity ribbon cutting ceremony. And thanks to my carpentry skills, I helped assemble all the furniture and exam tables and hung many of the medical storage units at the new Garfield clinic.”

He also guides patients from BVMI’s Prevent Diabetes Program on a hike every year through the 46 acre Teaneck Creek Conservancy, where he served on the board for 10 years, and is presently the Land Steward.

Dr. Reskakis finds great reward in volunteering with our team. “The people here recognize how important volunteers are and treat them like gold. Although I’m not paid staff I feel like I’ve been totally integrated into the team.”

He noted that because he frequently works with the volunteer physicians in cardiology, nephrology and endocrinology, he has seen firsthand how diabetes management makes a difference in patients’ lives.

“People who otherwise would have had serious and debilitating health issues have gotten their blood sugar under control and are taking their insulin regularly. We are able to help them get health services they would not be able to receive otherwise. The difference we make in people’s lives is truly remarkable.”
